Welcome Back!

Hello everyone! I hope you had a happy, restful holiday break.

Now back to work...   :)

Tonight:
Alphabetize your spelling words
Complete the multiplication worksheet. Remember, read the directions carefully before you begin. Each problem requires you to carry.
Read AR. Our party has been moved to December 16 so we can enjoy the party all afternoon, rather than having it on Friday when we have a half day. That leaves 17 calendar days till AR ends- only 13 school days!

Good luck and happy reading. :)

Happy Thanksgiving!

Hello students and families! I can tell you what I am thankful for this year---you!! I am so blessed to be your teacher and help you along your path of learning. Each and every one of you is a very special child and I am so proud to have you in my class. :)

Over the break: Please read your AR books. Students selected longer chapter books to read over the break so they can really rack up their AR points. So in-between snacking on turkey and pumpkin pie, don't forget to snuggle up with a great book.

Happy Thanksgiving and use this break to recharge and enjoy your family!

Mrs. Anderson :)

In preparation for Thursday's Reading Vocabulary Test, I am sending home a 2 worksheet packet that thoroughly reviews this week's vocabulary terms. Please review these terms with your child to help them become accustomed to hearing the words and their meanings. Thanks!

Silly Face Photography

Parents: Over the last few weeks, we have been discussing photography by studying Louis Daguerre, the "Father of Modern Photography." On Friday, we combined what we have learned about poetry and photography and made "Silly Face" poems and photos. Each student paired up with a partner and photographed them and then wrote a silly rhyming poem about them! They had a blast! Here are some of the silly faces I wanted to share with you. :)

Happy Weekend!

Hello parents and students!

I wanted to let you know about my class's new plans for making their AR goals each six weeks. Each student and I conferenced together and decided on a specific weekly goal. Students will strive to make these mini goals each week, so that they will make their AR goal slowly and methodically. I hope this will help students to avoid the last minute rush to complete their goals.

Happy reading!

Happy Veteran's Day! 11-11-10

Thank you to all who have served our country! You and your families sacrifices are greatly appreciated.

Homework:

Spelling sentences worksheet- use this as a chance to review for our test tomorrow.

Read AR- remember you have to read and test on three books by tomorrow.

Memorize multiplication facts- remember tomorrow is the final day for math facts testing. If you cannot complete your tables through 12x12 by tomorrow, you will be learning them at recess next week. I don't want anyone to miss out on recess, but we must memorize these facts before we can move forward in math.

GOOD LUCK!!!

Mrs. Anderson

Homework and a few important notes

Homework: Read AR, memorize at least two multiplication tables and complete the"Write the Right Word" worksheet.

Important Notes:

We need to start collecting cans for our classrooms ASAP! Several things have prevented us from beginning our school-wide collection program and we only have until Friday to collect our cans. The classroom with the most cans wins a party! It looks like 4th grade is in the lead with about 100 cans. We CAN do it!

I found a great website to help out your child with their weekly spelling list- www.spellingcity.com. Your student (or you) can type in the week's spelling words and the site will test your child or create a game using our weekly word list! So much fun! We will try to work in time during the day to try out this site as well.

Have a great night and please commit to bringing in at least 2 cans tomorrow!

Thank you for your generosity!

Mrs. A :)

Interesting Mathematics Link

Do you have a math whiz on your hands? Is your child is in need of some additional challenges in math? Check out this link I found!
It allows students to select a career and solve common, everyday math problems that arise.  http://www.mathapprentice.com/index.html

Have fun! :)

Wish List

Dear parents,

As we come to the close of our second six weeks, there are a few things I would like to ask from you. We use dry erase boards in the classroom that I purchased from the dollar store. Unfortunately, the are falling apart a bit. Also our class seems to be flying through the dry erase markers!

So I am reaching out to you. If it is at all possible I would greatly appreciate any donations of dry erase boards or dry erase markers. It makes our learning so much more engaging when students can immediately respond by writing out their answer on their boards.

Also, I am trying to expand our weekly art projects to include more fine arts. If you have any watercolors you could donate, that would greatly enhance our projects!

Thanks so much for helping keep our classroom an inspiring place. :)

Mrs. Anderson

November 2- ELECTION DAY!!!

Parents: Don't forget to get out and vote today. No matter your political opinions, make your voice heard! :)

Students:
Homework tonight: I am giving you two worksheets (yes, I know more worksheets!) one on the vocabulary from our story and one on comprehension of the story. I am sending these home to help you prepare for our Vocabulary and Comprehension Test on Thursday. "What Ever Happened to the Baxter Place" is a long story so make sure you completely understand the summary you read tonight.

AR CLOSES IN TWO DAYS!!! So far we have 10 friends at the AR party. The rest of you are so close and I know if you read tonight and tomorrow you can make it! Good luck and happy reading!

Mrs. Anderson

P.S. Please keep reviewing those multiplication flashcards! As we continue to get into more difficult material, you need to know those facts to move forward. THANK-YOU! :)

Monday, Nov. 1

Happy Monday everyone!
I hope you all had a wonderful Halloween weekend and are not too full of candy!

Tonight's homework: Alphabetize your spelling words and complete the 11 & 12 multiplication worksheet.

***********I WILL NOT be taking this worksheet for a grade, however since we have our test tomorrow, I want you to use this as an opportunity to review multiplcation for tomorrow's test. The test will cover multiplication and division in word problems and number problems. We have been practicing these problems for the last few weeks and I know you can do it! HINT: Write out the 11 and 12 times table before you start your homework. Then you can copy your answers from this "cheat sheet."

Note on the test: We have been reviewing sample problems in class. Everyone seems to be doing quite well so don't panic. :)

Only three days left of AR. So many of you have made your goals, but in case you haven't, keep reading!

Have a great night and get some rest for tomorrow's math test.

Thurs. Oct. 28

First of all congratulations to all my fantastic students! Your I-Search Projects were, overall, very well done!

Tonight: you need to review for your spelling test tomorrow. To help you with this, I have given you a spelling worksheet that requires you to seperate our spelling words into different group based on common word structures.
Also I am sending home an "Author's Purpose" worksheet. Some of you struggled with this topic last week so I want to revisit it.
Finally, please always review your mulitiplication flashcards and read AR. ONLY 5 SCHOOL DAYS LEFT TILL AR CLOSES! Some of you are so close! Please buckle down and get it done. :)

Have a great evening!

Wednesday

Read AR and practice multiplication flash cards.
I am sending home the homework from last night if you would like to review them before tomorrow's tests.

I-Search due tomorrow. Don't panic! This is not a traditional report. Just tell me about how you researched your topic. (Should be about one page in length. Use the prompts for each number 1-5 to help you write.) If you couldn't find information, tell me where you looked and why you think you did not find the information. Make suggestions on how you might complete your research differently next time. Remember this is just practice for traditional research projects in later grades. You can do it! I know you can!

Good luck and good night!
Mrs. Anderson :)

I tried to give a minimal amount of homework tonight (I know it looks like a lot, but it is only four very short assignments :) so that you and your family will join us at C******'s benefit tonight! I will be working a table there and I would love to see my class come out to support E*****'s big sister. The volleyball game starts at 6:00 pm in the big gym.

Have a wonderful night everyone!

Supporting our AR goals

Parents:

Just a quick note to let you know that in order to better support my students in reaching their AR goals, we will begin keeping a nightly Reading Log. I hope this will allow students to better pace themselves through reading larger chapter books.
We will also begin visiting the library three times per week starting Monday. We will now be going Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. This way your students will never have a shortage of books to read each night.
Good luck students! I would love to see you all at our AR party on November 5!!

October 4, 2010

Hello students and families!

Some changes are happening in our classroom this week. First, we have a new discipline plan. This plan is the same one used in fourth grade, thus promoting cohesion between the grades, as well as increased teacher-parent communication. Look for a letter explaining the new plan tonight and look for weekly behavior grades to come home on Friday. (Make sure both you and your child sign the letter sent home today please.)
Next, our first N.T.I.L. spelling test will be this Friday during tutoring. This test is open to all students and completely optional. It will cover the entire first page of the packets sent home last week (about sixty words?). Each week, those students who can correctly spell each word will move onto the next round. Study hard my awesome spellers!

Homework for tonight:
AR for at least 20 minutes on your new library books.
Language arts worksheet- adjectives/adding -ed
Alphabetize your spelling words.

Looking forward: Reading Test Thursday over this week's story "The Go-Around Dollar"; Spelling Test Friday

Have a wonderful evening!

Mrs. A

Friday, October 1, 2010

Friday, October 1

We had a wonderful AR party today! I hope all of my students can join us next time so please read, read, read. :)

Notes:

I have consulted with the 4th grade teacher and we will be begin a new discipline policy next week to promote consistency from 3rd to 4th grade. I will send home a letter explaining the policy in detail on Monday, but basically this new plan will increase the communication between myself and you about your child's classroom behavior. You will receive weekly, written updates on your child's behavior at the end of each week.

Also, since the six weeks ended in the middle of the week this week, our AR sheets sent home today may be a bit confusing. The points listed are for the entire week, but only Wednesday through Friday will count towards the 2 six weeks AR goal (since this is when the second six weeks started). The most important thing is that your child understands their new, higher AR goal. (This goal is based on your child's reading level and is individualized for each student.)

Hope that all makes sense! For some reason I cannot comment on my own blog posts, but I will look into correcting this problem. I am reading your comments though and I love to see them! For now, please email me if you have any questions.

Have a fantastic weekend!

Mrs. A.

We have now read the story three times and reviewed it extensively in class. However, more review can never hurt right? I will be having a review session tomorrow morning during tutoring that you may attend if you like.

F. Y. I.
Last night's homework caused some confusion. I apologize and will make sure to explain the directions better before the end of each day. No grade will be taken on last night's homework, instead it will be  returned tomorrow with a "dog stamp."  This is my way of letting your know I recieved the work and took it for a completion grade only.

Hello all!

Congratulations to all for finishing your math test today. Many people struggled with the rounding so remember, if you made a 70 or below you can correct your answers tonight to raise your grade to a 70. If your child did well, please let them know that their outstanding work is recognized! Any student who met their grade goal went to the treasure box!

Wednesday

Happy Birthday to Y******!

Parents/Guardians,

Tonight I have asked students to review for their math test tomorrow covering three digit addition and subtraction, as well as estimating three digit addition and subtraction using rounding.
I have also asked that they read their new library books that we checked out today. Remember- only 7 calendar days left of AR this six weeks. Our party will be Friday, Oct. 1, but AR closes at the end of school on Tuesday (the last day of the 6 weeks.) Get those points in please!
We are working on City Guides this week in Social Studies. Although this is classwork, it involves online research which can be a challenge with only 4 computers! So some students wanted to bring theirs home to work on. THIS IS NOT HOMEWORK. However, I can't discourage my students from going above and beyond to do a great job! :)

Good luck tomorrow students. I know you can do it!!

Tonight's homework is to read the "Dolphin Play" by Elizabeth Dombeck. We will be having a reading comprehension quiz in the morning to test how well you read and recalled this short story. I suggest you read it at least twice.
Word problems worksheet. Read the suggested four step process to approach math word problems. Then complete the word problems on the opposite page. Practice these because our math test on Thursday will include word problems. :)
Finally, keep reading! 20 minutes of AR. Finish at least one of your books tonight, we will be going to the library in the morning.

Reminders: Math Test Thursday covering addition and subtraction, as well as estimating addition and subtraction.
Spelling Test Friday- keep reviewing those words.

KEEP UP THE HARD WORK!! I can really tell when you study at night. :)

Last day of 3rd Week

Hello students and parents/guardians,

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all those who donated to our can food drive. I am overwhelmed by the generosity of my students and parents!

As we mark the end of the third week of school, I sent home numerous graded papers. Please make sure to check out your child's folder and remove all papers in the LEFT AT HOME pocket.

In the BRING RIGHT BACK pocket, you will find a weekly AR signature sheet, several book orders, a PTO fundraiser order form/booklet and a school photo order form.

Students: Don't forget to continue to read nightly for at least twenty minutes. We are working towards our personal pledge of 10 books so we can mark off our star on our goal sheet.
Parents: We have joined Scholastic's Classrooms Care reading pledge. For each book we read, another is donated to local Texas charities. Check out the website for more information- http://classroomscare.scholastic.com/

Have a wonderful weekend!

Wednesday

Read 20 minutes of AR tonight. ***This is particularly important since we have a short week this week. I still want everyone to complete three AR books this week, so please read each night.

We took our math test today and some students had difficulty with the rounding portion of the test. I sent home an additional, ungraded worksheet (including answers) for your students to review tonight for their re-test tomorrow morning. If you child did not receive one, then they did well on their first test! Congrats!

For the final math test grade, I will average the first and second test. Those who scored 80 or better on their first test will not need to retest.

Please keep up the emails, notes and comments. I really appreciate your input and I am always ready to listen. :)

Friday News

Congratulations to all my students and parents! Overall, our first spelling test was a great success. I can certainly tell you have been practicing with your child.

Remember: No school on Monday. :)
Biography Timeline is due Tuesday.
Math test on Wednesday covering rounding, place value and comparing numbers.

Keep reading 20 minutes per day! Readers are leaders!

Please check your child's homework folder for important information. Two of the papers must be signed and returned on Tuesday.

As we continue our unit on communities, please remember we will be having a classroom-wide can food drive all next week. We have also become part of a wonderful campaign called WE GIVE BOOKS. This program allows you to read a book online and for each book you read, one is donated to the charity of your choice! Our class selected Tinga Tinga Tales, an East African charity, as the recipient of our free books. I try to make time in class to read these books, but if you would like to contribute to our total please go the following website: http://www.wegivebooks.org/. There you will enter my email as the User ID- KAGAnderson@yahoo.com- and the password is Tioga.

Have a fantastic long weekend!

Wednesday, Sept. 1

Homework: Read 20 minutes of AR.

Remember each child must read and test on 4 AR books per week. Since we have one computer down, I may lower it to 3 books if time is not allowed for all students to adequately test.

Have your child continue to work on their timeline, due Tues. Sept. 7.

First spelling test this Friday. I sent home a list of words and definitions. Practice by reading the definition aloud and having your child spell the correct response.

Today we discussed the three states of matter and the writing process. Ask you child about it :)

Have a great night! Mrs. A

Tuesday

Homework:
Begin working our your biographical timeline. (Remember to pace yourself and work on it bit-by-bit.)
"Singular and Plural Nouns" worksheet
Read 20 minutes.

Clearing up some confusion: Last night I asked for students to alphabetize their spelling words. This means ALL spelling words must be written out in alphabetical order. You can use a new piece of paper or just write on the back on the spelling words list. Thanks!

I am sending home a paper with 8 ideas for reading with your child. Please review it and see how you can fit more reading into each day. :)

I am also sending home a reminder that our class will be collecting boxtops again this year. Please bring them in whenever you like and add them to our class box. Remember- the class with the most boxtops earns a party!! Woo-hoo!

Biopoems

These are our biopoems. These poems have a very specific format which students follow to share information about themselves. These poems help me to better understand who they are and what they enjoy. I am very proud of their excellent work!

First Day of School

Hello parents and students! We just finished up our first day of school and I am equally thrilled and exhausted. :) It was a pleasure working with your children today and I look forward to many exciting days to come.
Today we discussed our primary goal/classroom rule: acting with integrity. Ask you child about this and see if they can identify exactly what this means.
Homework: Read 20 minutes. Complete and check Addition Math Frenzy worksheet.
See you tomorrow!

Check out this wonderful map with the South Pole placed at the top

I am very interested in asking my students to reconsider their perspectives on what they believe they know. This map helps students recognize the circular shape of our earth and that map orientation is not absolute.

Meet the Teacher Night

It was such a pleasure meeting so many of you tonight! It looks like I will have an amazing group of students this year. I am so thrilled to know that I have such bright, interesting partners in learning to share the school year with! Thank-you to both my parents and students for taking the time to meet me. I so look forward to building our relationship in the future.

Back to School!!

My favorite time of the year is here again! In the spirit of life long learning, I will be attempting this blog to keep my students and parents as up to date as possible on the events in our third grade classroom. This will be my first attempt, so please be patient with me. :) I would love any input you may have on this blog, as well as suggestions for added content. I look forward to a fun and simulating new year!
