Final Week of School 2011

Hello parents and students!

Congratulations on making it to the end of the school year. As we finish our last week of instruction, I would like to intersperse our lessons with fun activities such as movies and games. If students/parents would like, you are welcome to bring a movie or game from home that you would like to share with the class. I only ask that the movie be rated G and that the board game not contain violence. (VHS or DVD movies are both fine.)

Thank-you for sharing and I look forward to having a great final week together!

Homework 05-16-11

As we count down the 10 final days of third grade, all of our homework with be a review of various topics we have covered throughout the year. If you find that you struggle with a homework assignment, this offers you an excellent opportunity to review and relearn the topic before you go on to fourth grade. Please let me know if you have any major issues, so that I can address them with you in class.

Tonight, you have two review math worksheets to complete. Please read the directions carefully.

PARENTS FYI: I am sending home numerous graded papers tonight. Please look them over and have your student make any needed corrections. Also, please note that some of the papers need to be signed and returned tomorrow. Thanks! : )
Thanks and have a wonderful evening!

Homework 05-12-11

In preparation for tomorrow's spelling test the homework for tonight will be to write 10 unique, complete sentences using at least 10 spelling words. These sentences will be judged on the following: capitalization, punctuation and, of course, correctly spelling the spelling words. Also, make sure each sentence makes sense. You are welcome to use more than 10 spelling words, but please underline them in each sentence so I can easily identify the 10 words.

Finally, please read AR (for the last night!!!) Remember that tomorrow, all library books are due back and must be returned to the library by 3:00 pm. AR will close at 3:00 pm tomorrow. The end of the year goal for third graders is 100 points and at least 80% correct. Right now we have 8 students who have reached this awesome goal. I am sooo proud!

Quick note: I will be out tomorrow, so the final AR reports and the behavior reports will be sent home on Monday, 5-16-11.

Have a nice night!

Note to Parents and Students

Today's math test grades were, overall, far lower than I had anticipated. We reviewed the test in class today and this evening I will be sending home the same test again, only it will be blank. If students would like to raise their original grade, they must complete this test at home, without parental help. Since today's test counts twice, I will replace ONE of the grades with the grade of the test completed at home. Because we reviewed the test today in class, it should be a much easier test to complete.

Tomorrow night I will send home both the original test, as well as the graded test completed at home. That way parents can sign that they have seen the grades and better understand how their student performed on this test.

THIS IS OPTIONAL. If you are happy with your original test grade and do not want to replace one of the two grades, you do not have to complete this test tonight. If you forget this test at home or do not return it by tomorrow morning, your grade with not be changed.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns about my procedures for assisting students with understanding this test material.

Monday, April 11, 2011- 15 days till Math TAKS

Dear parents and students,

In preparation for the upcoming Math and Reading TAKS we will be stepping up our at-home work. Every night between now and the Monday before TAKS (April 25), we will have at least one math or reading worksheet per night. This is what I like to call our "TAKS push" and helps us solidify all the skills we need to succeed on the TAKS test.

Just a reminder- in my classroom I try very hard not to "teach to the test," meaning that there is so much more to educating a child than just preparing for one standardized test. However, in the next two weeks we will begin working a much more TAKS-centered curriculum.

Here is what I need from parents:

Please talk to your child about their feelings about the upcoming TAKS tests. Students need to be assured that they are capable of doing well on the TAKS.

Help your student with the nightly worksheets. If they are struggling with a specific topic, please let me know and I will help them out at school, as well as send home additional learning material about that topic.

Make sure your child gets a little more rest than usual during this stressful time. Being tired can be very counterproductive to learning.

Eat healthy and get plenty of exercise. A healthy body helps keep those brains going strong!

HOMEWORK:

Two math worksheets covering time, number lines and fractions (which we covered in class today.)

Read AR for at least 20 minutes.

Together we can doing amazing things! I have faith that each and every one of my students is capable of greatness.

Mrs. Anderson :)

Review for tomorrow's spelling test.

Take a night off from reading (only if you want to that is!) I am so thrilled that my entire class will be participating in our AR party tomorrow!!

The creative process!

K and J worked together at all stages of the artistic process. I enjoyed hearing their thought process evolve. Great work!

Collaborative Art Project

This "Friday Art" we are exploring the challenge of creating collaborative (collective) art. Each student had to listen carefully to their partner and come to a consensus on what the finished product would look like. I have to say I was very impressed with my fantastic students. You worked together SO well. Also, I LOVE the look of concentration on N's face!

Thank-you from Tioga 3rd Grade!

A big thanks to Mr. Grubbs for his kind donation to our classroom. We love all our new fantastic paint colors.

I'm Back!

Sorry parents and students! It has been a rough few days for my family and me. First my youngest got sick, followed quickly by myself. After a big dose of antibiotics, I am happy to be back in the classroom. Yea, for modern medicine!

Homework Tonight:
-- Grammar worksheet pgs. 301-302. This worksheet covers synonyms, antonyms, adverbs and verb agreement. Everything is defined in detail at the top of page 301. Please read this carefully before you begin.
-- Read AR. Remember, even if you have reached your AR goal, you still must read and test on three books each week. Keep up the great work!

Stay healthy!

Thursday, March 24, 2011

Homework:

Cursive spelling words three times each, followed by three original sentences using at least three of your spelling words.

Wednesday, March 23, 2011

Homework:

Please finish the prefix/suffix packet sent home last night. It will be due tomorrow morning. Also, please remember, after completing the packet, make sure you take additional time to memorize the meaning of each prefix and suffix. Knowing these definitions is critical to decoding unknown words.

Read at least 20 minutes of AR. AR for this six weeks will close in 12 school days.

Reminders:

If you would like to wear flip-flops or hats, bring $1 for each item and drop your donation in the bucket in the cafeteria. All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society.

Also, yesterday I sent home Little Cesars Pizza Fundraiser fliers with each student. With possible budget shortfalls next year, this fundraiser is especially important to raise money for next year's field trips. The top two sellers from each grade will recieve a pizza lunch!! Good luck!

Tuesday March 22, 2011

Tonight's homework:
Tonight's homework is a bit different because students will have two nights to complete it. In other words it is not due until THURSDAY morning. The homework consists of two pages, front and back, that cover a variety of prefixes and suffixes. Knowing the meaning of these prefixes and suffixes aids students in decoding unknown words encountered while reading.
The reason I am giving students two nights, instead of one, is because I want them to really take their time and try to memorize the meanings of these prefixes and suffixes. Try not to rush through and cram it all into one night.
Please make sure you come to class on Thursday with a solid understanding of these prefixes and suffixes.

Read AR for at least 20 minutes.

Have a great evening!

Welcome back everyone! I don't know about you but I had a wonderful, relaxing Spring Break and I am refreshed and ready to get back into learning!

Reminders:
Tomorrow is the last day to turn in money and orders for student class and Spring pictures. Order forms were sent home before the break.
For the next two weeks, students may wear flip-flops and/or hats at the cost of $1 per item, per day. All proceeds go the American Cancer Society. Go Team Chalisa!

Homework:
Read AR for at least 20 minutes. This six weeks we have a few extra days, so I really hope to see everyone at our AR party on April 8th.
As we continue our study of all operations (multiplication, division, addition and subtraction) I would like my students to develop a faster speed of computation time. To do this, we have to practice repeatedly. Tonight's worksheet helps to develop that type of speed. After completing the worksheet, I ask that parents quiz their child orally on the questions to reinforce understanding.

Have a great night and I look forward to seeing you all tomorrow!

Mrs. Anderson :)

Spring Break!!

It's finally here (yes, teachers love Spring Break too) Spring Break!! Please make sure you have tons of fun over this break. I want you all to play outside, ride your bikes and just enjoy being a kid. Then, in those rare moments of boredom, how about you grab a book and read? I always look forward to the chance to read for fun over the breaks. I will be reading Roald Dahl's Boy and Going Solo, what will you be reading?

Have fun and don't forget to be safe please!

Mrs. Anderson  :)

Reminder: March 21-April 1 you can wear flip-flops or a hat if you pay one dollar for the privilege. All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society!! Go Team Chalisa!

Tonight's homework is to complete the spelling cursive worksheet or the 10 sentences worksheet, depending on your word list for Friday. For the cursive worksheet, please write each word three times each and don't forget to create 2 sentences at the end of the worksheet. These sentences must include at least one underlined spelling word.

Also, please remind your child to test on at least three books this week. If your child has already done so, they can have a night off of reading!

Homework 03-07-11

Fill in the operation worksheet. The final half of this six weeks we will be focusing on all four basic math operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. On this worksheet, students must decide which operation to use in order to make the number sentence correct.
For instance, if the problem is 4__4= 16, the student would put an "x" in the blank, since four times four is sixteen. ****Keep in mind that there may be more than one valid operation for some problems.

Surrealism: Learning about Salvador Dali

Today in art we discussed surrealism. This is a style of art made popular by Salvador Dali. It incorporates dreams with reality to create a strange, etheral image that shocks the viewer. I am very impressed with the work my budding artists created today!

Dairy Presentation

Posted by Picasa

Wed. 03-02-11

Parents- Ask you student about the Dairy Presentation we had the morning. It was awesome!

Homework: Read AR for at least 20 minutes. Remember, you are in control of your pacing. If you need to read 30 minutes on Monday, in order to read only 10 minutes of Tuesday, that is just fine with me. Learning the art of pacing yourself takes time to master, that is why I ask for 20 minutes per night. However, I trust that you are capable, intelligent students who can decide their own reading schedule- as long as you continue to meet your AR goals.

Tomorrow we will have our social studies test on the structure and functions of government. I am sending home a review worksheet. Parents, please study this with your child to get a better sense of what tomorrow's test will hold. This is not an assignment that is "due," rather I am sending it home to better prepare your student for tomorrow's test.

As always, my door is always open to you with any questions or concerns. My conference is 10:25-11:15 M-F. Please do not hesistate to call or email me.

03-01-11

Wow! You all must have put in some extra effort last night! I was very pleased with the math test grades today. Congrats!

Homework: Tonight students will get the opportunity to put their newly developed persuasive writing skills to the test. I am sending home a writing prompt that asks students to pretend they are running for the mayor of Tioga. I ask that students follow the following rules when completing this assignment:

1. Write in cursive only.
2. Sketch out main reasons briefly at the top of the page so you know what you plan to write about.
3. Indent each paragraph. ( I am not assigning a specific length to write.)
4. Remember what we learned in class today about how to structure a persuasive paragraph: topic sentence, reason, reason, BEST reason, concluding sentence (summarize your positions).

I will also suggest that students bring home their Language Arts Handbook and sample persuasive writing to assist them. Parents- please ask students to show you this information.

Good luck and happy writing!

Substitute Day 2-10-11

Hello students! I am very sorry to have missed out on spending a day with you all. However, my eldest is sick and unfortunately Mom trumped Teacher today. :)

Homework: Complete you AR book report if you have not already done so. Remember, all three assignments I sent home on Tuesday will be due tomorrow.
Study for tomorrow's spelling test.
Finish up those final AR points. AR closes tomorrow at lunch and our AR party will be tomorrow afternoon. Don't forget my promise- if everyone comes I will bring something extra special to share.

Have a wonderful night and I will see you bright and early tomorrow morning.

Wow- what a day!

Whew! We are exhausted! In anticipation of a possible snow day tomorrow, third grade completed a massive amount of learning and testing all in one day. I am very impressed with everyone's hard work and committment.
I also sent home a HUGE amount of graded work today, so parents please keep an eye out for your child's latest graded work.

Homework:
For tonight students must write each of their spelling words three times each. Then write 2-3 sentences at the end of the worksheet using spelling words from this week's list.

NOTE:  I am also sending home Wednesday's and Thursday's homework just in case. Wednesday, each student will complete the 100th day poem frame. Thursday, each student will complete a AR book report on ONE of the several books they have brought home. (You can draw your favorite part of the book on the back if you like.)

Hopefully, I will see you all tomorrow and we won't have any more snow days, but it is better to be prepared than rushing to squeeze it all in before report cards next week.

THANK-YOU STUDENTS FOR RISING TO THE CHALLENGES OF A TRYING DAY! I AM SO VERY PROUD TO HAVE SUCH SMART, DILIGENT STUDENTS!!

Mrs. Anderson

P.S. Please continue to read. AR closes on Friday at lunch. :)

100th Day of School...finally!

Welcome back students! We have a lot of catching up to do to make up for our impromptu vacation. :) This week is going to require a great deal of hard work on the part of each student. Our AR party is this Friday, so we only have four more days to reach those goals.

Homework: Three dimensional figures worksheet. Read AR. PLEASE REACH THOSE GOALS! Remember, I will bring a special treat if all my wonderful students make their personal goals.

Have a great night! Our solar system test will be tomorrow morning, so make sure you get plenty of rest tonight. And don't forget: MY VERY EXCELLENT MOTHER JUST SERVED US NINE PIZZAS. :)

SNOW DAY!!!!

Bundle up and enjoy the winter weather while it lasts! Have a wonderful time building snowmen, having snow ball fights and, hopefully, (since we went to the library on Monday) snuggle up with a good book.  http://www.weather.com/weather/today/Tioga+TX+USTX1362

Stay safe everyone!

Monday 1-31-11- The 99th Day of School

Homework:

Each student has a spelling assignment based on the words they will be testing on on Friday. My "Monday group" will be creating a crossword puzzle of their words. The rest of my students will be writing their spelling words in sentences using the assigned worksheet.

Read 20 minutes of AR.

Have a great night!

Thursday 1-27

Homework:
(1) Write one, original paragraph using at least 8 spelling words. This paragraph must make sense, but can be written as a fantasy. For instance: "knot write phony climb," is not an appropriate sentence. However, "The lamb scrapped her knee, " would be fine.
(2) Finish reading the AR books you checked out on Wednesday. Remember, AR closes in two weeks.

Note: Please make sure you return your signed progress report to me. I need to know that parents are up-to-date on their child's progress. Parents: if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call me or schedule a conference. My conference time is Monday through Friday, 10:25-11:15. Please let me know ahead of time, so that I can be prepared for our meeting.

Have a great night!

Clay Model of our Solar System

Today in science, our third graders created clay models of our solar system. They had such a great time they hardly noticed they were learning about the size and order of our planets. :)

Good afternoon parents and students!

We have been working very hard on measurement for the last few weeks and tomorrow is our opportunity to show how much we have learned. Tonight I am sending home a 1 page review sheet, however, I suggest that your student briefly review their previous math assignments as well. Our test tomorrow will cover length, weight/mass, temperature, capacity, volume, perimeter, area and time. Whoa! Don't let that overwhelm you. We have covered this information extensively- just slow down and think and I know you will succeed!

Wednesday/Thursday's Homework

Due to the fact that we have our homecoming on Thursday night, I have decided to give homework tonight that will not be due until Friday morning. This way you and your student can finish the homework at a pace that works well for you and your family's schedule.

Homework:
Procedural reading packet. (NOTE: You do not have to actually make the kite. This is for reading comprehension purposes only.)
Write Friday's spelling words three times each.
Read AR library books.

Try not to be overwhelmed by the amount of this work. It is really not all that much and can be completed at your child's individual pace.

Good luck and don't forget that tomorrow is Spirit Day! Wear your favorite Tioga gear or green or white.

Tuesday's Homework

Write a two paragraph essay about what you have learned over the last two days about Dr. Martin Luther King, segregation and the Civil Rights Movement (I have not specifically used this wording-rather the students know it more generally as the 1950s and 60s.)
First paragraph (3-5) sentences: what I have learned.
Second paragraph (3-5) sentences: what I want to know more about.
Don't forget to write in cursive please.

Have a great night!

Field Trip to the NCTC Planetarium

Second and third grade had an exciting trip to the planetarium today. We learned a lot and even had an opportunity to enjoy a quick trip to the lovely Gainesville playground.

Monday 1-17-11- Happy Martin Luther King, Jr. Day!

Hello all!
Today we discussed Dr. King and his autobiography. Students also watched the famous "I have a dream" speech and shared their thoughts and ideas about this critical part of our nation's history.

Tonight's homework is a Martin Luther King, Jr. multiplication worksheet/word jumble. We all learned that Dr. King was an excellent student who excelled in school and we are all working to emulate that determination to progress in our education!

Wed. 1-12-11

Homework: Read AR for at least 20 minutes. Remember, you must test on at least 3 books per week. Also, I am now requiring you make at least a 70 on the AR quiz for the book to count. I don't want students rushing through books just to test on them before they are ready.

Note: I will most likely be out next Friday, 1-21-11. I therefore plan to move weekly behavior slips and weekly AR updates to Monday, 1-24-11.

Have a great night!

Wed. 1-05-11 REPORT CARDS SENT HOME TODAY!!

Hello everyone :)
Tonight's homework is to read AR for twenty minutes. FYI: Today your students retook their STAR test today.  This test helps to identify their personal reading levels. I am happy to say that everyone is making progress! When we visit the library on Friday, your child may have the opportunity to read a higher reading level. I am excited that we can continue to challenge our students' reading abilities!

PLEASE NOTE: Your child will be coming home with their report cards today. They will not be mailed as in previous six weeks. If you have any questions or concerns you may contact me tomorrow via phone or email.

Also, tomorrow I will be sending home a permission slip to visit the NCTC planetarium in Gainesville. Second and third grade will be going Tuesday, January 18. Please watch for this important letter in your child's folder tomorrow.

Thanks and have a great night!

Mrs. A :)

Tues, Jan. 3

Hello students!

Tonight you will be completing a worksheet reviewing the comma and its use in lists. Remember that commas are always used in a list or following the word "Yes" or "No" at the beginning of a sentence.

For example-
"I need three things from the refrigerator; an onion tomato and lettuce."
Without the commas, it reads as if I need "onion tomato." What on earth is an "onion tomato?" Instead, it should read "I need three things from the refrigerator- an onion, tomato, and lettuce."

Good luck and remember to turn in your book orders if you would like to order.

Monday, Jan. 3- Welcome Back!

Hello everyone! I hope you had a safe and joyous holiday season. I look forward to resuming our learning following a nice, restful two weeks off. :)

Tonight: Each student will have one of three spelling assignments, based on their level of expertise in this week's words. Each child should know their assignment, but if in doubt, have your student write one paragraph using at least five spelling words in the correct manner.
Finally, read AR for twenty minutes. Remember- start early and get those points in now so you can avoid cramming at the last minute.

Glad to see you all back!
Mrs. Anderson :)
